As a part of their seasonal installation series in which they collaborate with various artists in means of outfitting their flagship store with captivating artwork and designs, Korean eyewear brand Gentle Monster presents the new “Grand Blue” display by aquarium designer Justin Muir and glass sculptor Ivan Lee Mora.
The installation is an ocean-inspired display that pays tribute to the French film, Le Grand Bleu, as the artwork is meant to be a vision of peace and happiness on the surface of the ocean. Clashing waves and a high tide frozen in time in turn come together with sunken glasses to offer a unique experience of being deep below.
“Grand Bleu” is comprised of recycled, laminated glass which is shattered and layered to give an illusion of ocean swells and waves, and it is also paired with a custom aquarium that was created with a cabinet in cerused oak of grey and black with custom silver banker mesh and sand substrate from Fiji. LED lights in the aquarium then help highlight various clownfish and anemones, which have all been captive-bred or farmed in the U.S.
“Grand Bleu” is currently on display in Gentle Monster’s New York flagship (79 Grand Street in Soho) through August 31.
