The Graffiti dynamic is a three dimensional canvas which moves through the space between the floor it stands on and the glass surface above.
A sculptural surface that can exist as a jutting form in its own right or as a piece of modern urban architecture ready for the work of a graffiti artist, in this instance, the work of Danish artist Frederik Hesseldahl. The Graffiti table is both chaotic and systematic in its formulation and deliberate and cutting edge in its execution. Both the form and the applied artwork change and turn with every step around the table, It is never the same object twice.
Charlie Davidson has always followed graffiti art with a great admiration, when the explosion of 3D style graffiti literally jumped off the wall a few years he knew he would have to make a piece of furniture inspired by it. He said at the time “it was like graffiti art had become architecture”. “Seeing the spray painted shapes and lettering as actual 3D forms I quite naturally as a furniture designer transposed those images into solid shapes and ultimately functional objects”.
It was during the prototyping stage that Davidson realised he should make at least one table that was actually graffitied. He found Frederik’s work on Instagram (a great place to find collaborators) and met up with him in Copenhagen, Denmark. Over the next few months Frederik worked on the artwork whistle Davidson produced the metalwork for the final design.
The table is made from 3.5mm laser cut steel which is then folded using a CNC break-press machine and TIG welded together and powder coated. Frederik reworked a painting titled The rise of the phoenix to fit within into a template of the folded metal design that was then printed onto vinyl and hand applied to the outside of the metal form. The table has a 12mm thick x 1m diameter glass top and stands 35cm high.
Davidson has subsequently worked on further variations on the Graffiti table design including the Graffit Raw which he hand made at his studio from corroded 5mm plate steel.
