There’s a tradition of serving cold meals on large trays, displaying the variety in cheeses, vegetables, but mostly cold meats like salami and hams. As a host you show your hospitality and also, show off a little bit in a way it is served and spread, thin layers upon thin layers of your generosity towards any number of guests. This tradition cuts through small family gatherings as well as pompous banquets of state secretaries. It’s a shared tradition, which makes it a nice thing to quote.
