This year, Sifas harks back to Spain’s Movida and calls on great fashion designer Agatha Ruiz De La Prada, an icon of this celebrated cultural movement, to reinterpret the chair in its new Pheniks collection. The resulting capsule collection consists of three versions of the Pheniks chair and the Kwadra table that reflect the designer herself: ultra-colourful, feminine, and bursting with life!
The celebrated fashion designer has reinvented the chair’s seat and back by playing with a random and spontaneous weave of Textylene straps in a range of acid colours: one version has a fuchsia structure with straps in orange, yellow, and fuchsia; the second version sports a blue structure with blue, yellow, and green straps; and the third version features an orange structure with fuchsia, yellow, and orange straps. The structure of the Kwadra table has been reworked in three colours (fuchsia, blue, or orange) with a tabletop in white frosted glass, making the table a perfect match for any of the chairs.
Agatha Ruiz De La Prada:
I have always loved designing furniture, and it has become a real passion over time. Twenty years ago, I had the opportunity to design a collection of chairs for furniture manufacturer Amat-3, and it is still quite popular. More recently, I did a collection of children’s furniture for Vondom, as well as a furniture collection in recycled cardboard. Fashion is ephemeral and ruled by the seasons, but I love the idea that furniture is designed to last. The creative part of furniture design is quite similar to fashion, but on the other hand, it is very difficult to make THE perfect piece of furniture. This collaboration with Sifas has been very satisfying and it takes me back to my roots: I come from a family of architects and architects have always had a tradition of creating furniture as well. I could have been an architect; I’m obsessed with Bauhaus! The collection I designed for Sifas is an ode to colour and joy. This trend is very much in vogue in outdoor furniture right now. This collection represents my personality: just like light, colour is gives life to a home; all the furniture in my house is colourful! There is nothing like colour for putting people in a good mood.
This new collection is a spirited expression of the art of living as practiced in the South and it brings to the fore values she holds dear: the sunshine, conviviality, sharing, and generosity common to the spirit of Madrid and the Côté d’Azur. Characterised by its mix-and-matchability, this collection lends itself to playing with colour. This is a vibrant and joyful collection in keeping with the work of Agatha Ruiz De La Prada, who has gained renown as the creator of a unique and very personal style that has drawn on fantasy and colour; she has rejected minimalism while finding her true artistic voice.
This is a collection that is equally at home indoors or outdoors, on a waterfront terrace, in a sunlit patio, or in an open, convivial kitchen that exudes the feeling of the South and the shores of the Côte d’Azur.
