Belgian designer Quentin de Coster has created a prototype for an LED lamp that replicates the looks and functionality of an oil lamp.
ARGAND, which takes its name from the Swiss physicist Ami Argand’s oil lamp innovation of the same name, has a refined profile comprised of base, cylinder, and LED module. The lamp’s two-component brass base, plated in pink gold, holds a vertical glass tube that contains strips of LED lights, an element designed to be raised or lowered via a small knob—thereby, mimicking the movement of a lamp’s wick, along with its manually controlled illumination.
A bulb-like glass shade fits snugly over ARGAND’s brass body, allowing the LED ‘wick’ to shine through, emitting nuanced lighting akin to that enjoyed from an oil lamp—with considerably less effort.
