Multifaceted and playful – at imm cologne 2017, Thonet presents the new side table S 18 by Uli Budde. The circle is the distinguishing element of this design. Reminiscent of an infinite loop, the linear tubular steel frame forms a pendant corresponding to the tabletop and the central motif of the circle. With its sophisticated, clever design, the S 18 opens up new and exciting looks from any perspective.
“From the onset, the form of the circle was very important to me for the design. I understand the motif of the circle in this design as an ode to the first Thonet bentwood classics,” says Uli Budde, explaining his design approach. Linear elements are also essential for the design. The tubular steel frame results from a closed loop, hinting at Marcel Breuer’s layout of lines that was typical for the Bauhaus and perceived as infinite. Based on these two geometric forms, the table reveals ever-new perspectives. This dynamics gives it a spontaneous and young character as well as a classic one. The simple S 18, due to the graphic and at the same time poetic signature of the designer, represents a contemporary occupation with the Thonet brand.
The side table is available with a powder-coated base frame and a lacquered surface in black. In residential or lounge areas, as part of a comfortable seat group or as a solitary item – the use of the table is highly flexible. The S 18 can also be combined with numerous pieces from the Thonet portfolio thanks to its minimalistic formal language – not just the tubular steel classics but also products including the lounge chair 808, whose striking “collar” shape matches the curves of the table frame. Produced with the usual high Thonet quality, the S 18 is a contemporary table with a well-conceived touch of tradition – a fresh addition to the Thonet world of products.
